born from a lifelong affection for our magical oceans and a love of surfing, we are an earth-minded, ethically made, functional swim and surfwear brand with a desire to create a like-minded community. we are committed to providing comfortable, long-lasting garments while minimizing environmental impact and giving back to communities in need around the world.

earth minded

Mālie’s swimwear is made in a solar factory naturally powered by sunshine. Our swimwear is made using recycled fabrics made partly from ocean waste and plastic bottles. All printed fabrics are created using OEKO-TEXÒ certified eco ink. Swimwear printing is done completely in-house in one factory to avoid unnecessary shipping from third party suppliers in other locations or countries, thereby reducing carbon emissions. Proceeds from every bikini made are donated to grassroots organizations that support the environment, women’s access to education, and those in need.

small batch

Mālie only creates swimwear in small, demanded quantities to avoid waste and further burden on the environment. We offer the option to pre-order periodically for this reason to have an accurate gauge on how many pieces need to be produced at a given time. Your patience in the delivery of pre-ordered items is reducing the impact on our beautiful planet.

Ethical manufacturing process: Hand-sewing swimwear, highlighting Mālie the label's commitment to ethical labor practices

ethically made

The swimwear manufacturers we partner with far exceed minimum labor standards. All factory staff are paid above award wages at up to three times the standard and negotiate their own contracts and salaries. They are provided with comprehensive health insurance for themselves and their family. Factory staff work less than 40 hours per week, meal allowance is included, and any voluntary overtime is paid accordingly. The factories participate in profit sharing that is paid annually, including staff at all levels. Our manufacturers pride themselves in ongoing worker engagement in business development and decision making; and provide opportunities in worker training, capacity building and personal development.

Our Development

Process

Fishing nets, plastic bottles, fabric scraps, and carpet flooring are collected. The waste is melted to create flakes and transformed to nylon and plastic chips, which are made into fabric fibers, and ultimately converted into nylon fabric. The fabrics are supplied to the solar powered swimwear factory where workers are paid a fair wage, treated ethically, and provided health insurance. Sustainable swimwear is created from recycled fabrics and packed into biodegradable pouches for shipment. The development process promotes water saving, reduction of CO2 emissions, energy reduction, and proceeds are donated directly to preserving our oceans and supporting women’s education before the swimwear even leaves the factory.

Our Earth-minded

Fabrics

ECONYL

Econyl is a revolutionary recycled fiber tricot fabric made in Italy and engineered with sun cream, chlorine and piling resistance, UV protection, shape retention, and two-way stretch. It is composed of 22% elastane and 78% recycled nylon creating a buttery soft, extra cozy feel.

REPREVE

Repreve is a performance polyester fiber made from recycled post-consumer waste, like plastic bottles, composed of 20% elastane and 80% recycled nylon. It is created by Unifi, a textile company who is dedicated to making high-quality fabrics that are more earth-minded. Utilizing recycled polyester instead of virgin fabrics produces fewer carbon emissions. This fabric choice gives plastic bottles a second life and keeps them out of oceans and landfills.

OUR ECO-CONSCIOUS

Packaging

Packaging has historically been one of the most wasteful industries in existence. The rapid rise in consumerism and global trade in the past decade has increased the demand for packaging. Sadly, only about 7% of packaging is recycled, leading to most plastic packaging ending up in landfills or polluting natural environments, including our beautiful oceans, where it causes harm to wildlife and ecosystems. Our packaging supplier is on a mission to change poor packaging and recycling practices. To solve the global packaging waste crisis, constant raw material innovation, new manufacturing techniques, and strict discipline to the materials used is required. All of our supplier’s products and films are vetted to be compostable, recyclable, or made from post-consumer recycled content.
